The United States Ambassador to Benin, Brian Shukan, handed over a donation of equipment to the Ministry of Justice and Legislation this Tuesday, December 19, 2023. Worth 43.5 million CFA francs, the donation from the United States consists of videoconferencing equipment, laptops, desktop computers, printers and other electronic devices. It is part of the support of the government of the United States of America for capacity building and modernization of the Justice sector in Benin. “The United States is proud to play an active role in the government of Benin’s justice modernization program,” declared the United States Ambassador to Benin.
Part of the equipment will allow the Judicial Training Institute to reach a wider audience through online training. The other part will support the administrations and functioning of the courts.
According to Brian Shukan, “support for digitalization, management of administration files and the functioning of the courts will result in more efficient judicial processes and prosecutions, which will improve access to the judicial system for Beninese citizens “.
The diplomat announces that the United States Embassy through the INL (International Office of the Department of Narcotics and Law Enforcement) is working with the Department of Justice on a justice modernization program. This is a project designed to provide the judicial system with the training and professionalization it needs. “It will also improve the general administration of the courts, their functioning and the digitalization of case management,” added Brian Shukan. The Ambassador reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting reform of the Justice sector and access to justice for all citizens of Benin. The equipment offered by the United States is intended for the directorates and structures under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice including, among others, the Benin Prison Agency (APB); the National Criminal Records Center (CNCJ); the Training School for Judicial Professions (EFPJ); the Directorate of Legal and Judicial Child Protection (DPJJE).
The Minister of Justice and Legislation welcomed this timely donation of equipment. “The objective is to ensure that each judicial actor (magistrate, registrar, and others, Editor’s note) has all the necessary equipment so that we can provide Beninese citizens with the public legal services they expect” , said Yvon Détchenou. According to the minister, the reform at the sector level is implemented in order to ensure the accessibility, quality and speed of justice. He called for greater support from the United States on all issues relating to reform of the justice sector.
The Minister of Justice and Legislation did not fail to praise the quality of the partnership with the United States. “This quality of relationship is exceptional and unique. I thank you,” added Me Yvon Détchenou.
