Rahul Gandhi Meets Wrestlers in Support of Ongoing Dispute with WFI

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has shown his support for the ongoing dispute between the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and wrestlers by meeting with top wrestlers in Chhara village of Haryana. The meeting included 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold medalist Deepak Punia and other renowned wrestlers. During the visit, Rahul Gandhi also engaged in a wrestling session and workout with the athletes.

In a related development, Olympian Vinesh Phogat has announced her decision to return her awards in protest of the ongoing issue with WFI. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Phogat highlighted the alleged mockery of women wrestlers by BJP MP and former WFI president Brij Bhushan. She also pointed out that Sakshi Malik had announced her retirement in protest against the newly elected WFI chief, leaving her Padma Shri award on the pavement of Kartavya Patha in New Delhi.

The election of Sanjay Singh as the new WFI president has further fueled the controversy, with Olympic medalists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia expressing disappointment during a press conference in New Delhi. The wrestlers voiced their dismay over the return of power to individuals who they believe had previously oppressed them.

The ongoing dispute between WFI and the wrestlers has caused a stir in the Indian sports community, with top athletes taking a stand against what they perceive as mistreatment and disrespect. The support from political figures like Rahul Gandhi adds another layer to the already heated situation, signaling that the issue is gaining attention at the highest levels of government.
