The UN appointed a humanitarian aid and reconstruction coordinator for the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. Sigrid Kaag The outgoing Dutch finance minister will be tasked with overseeing aid shipments to the Palestinian region, in accordance with the resolution adopted by the UN Security Council (SC) on Friday, which provides for the acceleration of humanitarian aid.
According to the UN announcement, Kaag will take up his duties on January 8.
In this role, his task is to facilitate, coordinate, supervise and authenticate humanitarian shipments to the Gaza Strip
announced by the world organization. He added that his duties will also include the creation of a mechanism to speed up aid through countries that are not part of the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Kaag is a veteran UN diplomat who previously headed an international group of arms control experts tasked with overseeing the elimination of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile.
