Dr. Saviera Parkash Makes History as First Hindu Woman Candidate in Pakistan General Elections

In a historic turn of events, Dr. Saviera Parkash has become the first Hindu woman to seek a mandate in the upcoming general elections of Pakistan. The elections for the 16th Parliament of Pakistan are set to begin on February 8, and Dr. Zaveera Parkash is contesting from Bunar district of Khyber Pakhtoon province near Islamabad.

The 25-year-old candidate has already submitted her nomination for the elections. Dr. Parkash, who graduated with an MBBS degree from the International Medical College, Abbottabad in 2022, is gearing up for her first national general election. Notably, she is also contesting from two constituencies simultaneously – the Buner general seat and another women’s reserved constituency.

Coming from a family with a strong political background, Dr. Parkash’s father, Dr. Om Parkash, recently retired from government service as a senior doctor and is an active worker of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Dr. Zaveera Parkash herself is an active worker of PPP and holds the position of District General Secretary of Women’s Wing.

Dr. Parkash aims to follow in the footsteps of her father and work towards helping the poor in rural areas of Pakistan. Her candidacy has garnered support from various quarters, including Imran Naushad Khan, a social media influencer from Buner, who highlighted the significance of Dr. Parkash’s candidacy in the local context.

The bold step taken by Dr. Saviera Parkash marks a significant moment in the history of general elections in Pakistan, especially in light of the reports of persecution of religious minorities in the country. As the elections draw near, Dr. Parkash’s candidacy is sure to bring attention to the issue of religious minority representation in the country’s political landscape.
