You can be one of the best drivers in the world, and still have problems renting a car. Max Verstappen, who recently celebrated his third world champion title, had the bitter experience of this during a recent stay in Portugal. When he asked a car rental company to rent a Mercedes AMG GT, the Dutchman was refused. Only 26 years old, he did not respect the rule imposed by Sixt, the rental company, namely 30 years minimum for such a car, which can reach 310 km/h.
The English media “The Sun” managed to contact the Faro airport agency, which confirmed this funny mishap. “The employees of our franchise partner in Portugal only followed the rules established for insurance reasons,” they explained. Max Verstappen finally left with a BMW 5 Series, less powerful but just as elegant as the desired model.
This is, however, the last time that the Dutchman will face such refusal. Given the status of this very special customer, Sixt has promised that this will not happen again. “There is of course no doubt about his driving skills and his experience with powerful cars. From today, he can rent the car he wants from us at any time,” the agency assured.
The three-time world champion was still able to enjoy his vacation. In particular, he reserved the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve racing circuit to keep control.
