The naturalist and conservationist Jesús Garzón has died at the age of 77, as Ecologists in Action Extremadura lamented this past Sunday in a press release in which they highlighted his fight “almost alone to save” the Monfragüe Park from the plans of eucalyptus plantation.

In its work, the group has also valued the pedagogical effort that Garzón made directly with the children and adult population, as well as his activism as a “pioneer” for the recovery and conservation of livestock trails, which, according to , “were and are the object of the illegal appropriation and subsequent destruction of a public asset of incalculable value.”

Defense of the naturalist

On the other hand, Ecologists in Action Extremadura has recalled the defense and recovery that the Madrid-born naturalist led in favor of transhumance, as well as his fight against climate change.

Garzón was also general director of the Natural Environment of the Government of Extremadura between 1984 and 1987.

“From Ecologists in Action of Extremadura he will always be remembered as a reference to follow in the environmental fight,” the group concluded.
