Health authorities report increase in malaria cases

Seventy-nine thousand 193 cases of malaria were diagnosed in the period from January to September this year, in different hospital units in the province of Cunene, said today (Thursday), in the city of Ondjiva, the provincial supervisor of the program to combat malaria illness, André Domingos.

Of the registered cases, 113 resulted in deaths.

Speaking to ANGOP, the supervisor said that, compared to the period of 2022, there is an increase of 17 thousand 341 cases and a decrease of two deaths.

He said that, by administrative area, the municipality of Cuvelai, with 24 thousand 692 cases, leads the disease rate, followed by Ombadja (23,394), Cuanhama (16,317), Cahama (9,508), Namacunde (4,325) and Curoca (957 cases).

Regarding mortality, he reported that 44 cases of deaths were registered in Cuanhama, followed by Ombadja (27), Cuvelai (22), Cahama (10), Namacunde (seven) and Curoca (three).

He said it is necessary for people to always be on alert and take extra care to avoid certain situations, some with deadly consequences.

The supervisor pointed to the need to reflect on the excess of malaria cases in the region, highlighting that prevention constitutes the biggest bet in combating the disease.

He recommended that the population strive to improve basic sanitation, eliminating breeding grounds for mosquitoes, such as ponds and rubbish, as well as making correct use of mosquito nets.

Malaria is an acute febrile infectious disease, caused by protozoa of the Plasmodium type, transmitted by the infected female Anopheles mosquito, also known as the “nail mosquito”. FI/LHE/OHA
