The telenovela “Super League” is still far from having broadcast its last episode. After the unexpected development of last week, and the order taken by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) which makes it illegal for FIFA and UEFA to take sanctions against players or clubs who wish to participate in dissident competitions, the contours of this new ambitious European competition continue to take shape.
According to Spanish media Sport et Cadena COPE, it would even already have a budget: 15 billion euros to finance its first three seasons, from European and American investment funds. The promoter of the competition, A22, would even consider it “perfectly acceptable” according to Sport to start this new competition in September 2025, that is to say in a little less than two years.
Almost double the money allocated by UEFA to clubs in its competitions
“In principle, of the 5 billion euros per season, 4.6 would be allocated and distributed between the participating clubs while the remaining 400 million would go to the so-called solidarity fund, made up of training, amateur football and clubs “having not participated in the Super League”, details the Barcelona daily, which does not specify how this sum would be distributed between the 64 clubs in the three divisions.
For comparison, UEFA announced having distributed to its clubs, for the 2022-2023 season of the Champions League alone, 2.002 billion euros, 465 million euros for those of the Europa League and 235 million euros for the Europa Conference League, i.e. 2, 7 billion euros in total.
This new press announcement comes as UEFA, according to information from the Times, sent a letter to the CJEU asking it to modify “inaccurate” and “contrary to the decision” statements in its press release relating the decree of December 21, and on which the supporters of the Super League would have relied to claim victory.
