Ministers come and go, and the health system remains in crisis

DECRYPTION – After the resignation of Aurélien Rousseau, no less than six Ministers of Health have succeeded one another since 2017, an instability which highlights the government’s difficulties in responding to major health issues.

This is one of the collateral damages of the vote on the immigration law: the resignation of Minister of Health Aurélien Rousseau. However, four years after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the ministry’s projects are colossal. Hospitals and emergencies in crisis, multiplication of medical deserts, aging of the population… A situation which could have called for a little stability.

But since the departure of Agnès Buzyn who, in February 2020, on the eve of the pandemic, left her post to run for a mandate in the capital, no less than five ministers have succeeded one another on Avenue de Ségur. First Olivier Véran, who established himself during the Covid crisis. Then the short-lived Brigitte Bourguignon (1 month and 14 days), beaten in the legislative elections, then replaced by emergency physician François Braun. The next, Aurélien Rousseau, will have remained in post for less than six months.
