The number of dogs in Europe has tripled almost 200% in eight years, reaching 73 million dogs registered in the EU at the end of 2022, according to the Royal Canine Society of Spain (RSCE) based on estimates from the International Cynological Federation (FCI) and the European Commission.

In this way, these figures have tripled the data since 2014, when FCI statistics showed an approximate number of 24.5 million dogs in Europe, which also show a “growing” trend among society due to the fact that there are increasingly more homes with a dog as a pet.

The greatest growth in these eight years occurred between 2015 and 2016

To do this, the FCI has collected statistics on purebred and mixed breed specimens from 52 countries, 43 of them European; seven transnationals, including Russia, Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia and Kazakhstan, and two outside European territory, Israel and Uzbekistan.

Specifically, the greatest growth in these eight years occurred between 2015 and 2016, with an increase from 38 to 51 million dogs in European households. In addition, during the pandemic there was an increase of 11%, since between 2020 and 2021 the number of dogs increased from 60.7 million to 67.4 million, 11% more, while in 2022 it rose to 73 million with an increase of 9%.

Thus, these data show a stabilization in the number of dogs in recent years “after skyrocketing” during the pandemic, which according to the RSCE was due to Covid-19 restrictions, which allowed walks with pets, and the proliferation of social networks in which “they often appear with animals.”

On the other hand, of the 73 million dogs currently registered, about nine million, which represent 12%, are found in Spain, where approximately 1 million of the dogs are purebred and are registered in a Book of Origins.

Abandonment in Spain

More than 790 abandoned dogs and cats were picked up on average per day by Spanish animal shelters in 2022. More than 288,000 pets are abandoned each year in Spain, the European country with the highest abandonment figures.
