DMDK leader Vijayakanth passes away at 71

Chennai: DMDK president Vijayakanth, aged 71, passed away yesterday due to ill health. The political figure had been resting at home for years due to his declining health, with the last year seeing him admitted to the hospital on multiple occasions. Leaders from across the country, including Prime Minister Modi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mamata Banerjee, have extended their condolences to Vijayakanth’s family and supporters.

Vijayakanth, who had been residing at his home due to health issues, was rushed to Myatt Hospital in Chennai on November 18 due to breathing difficulties. Despite intensive treatment, his health continued to deteriorate, and he was readmitted to the hospital on the night of the 26th. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the medical staff, his condition worsened, and he passed away at 6.10 am yesterday.

The news of his passing has led to an outpouring of grief from the political community. Chief Minister Stalin, along with ministers and leaders from various parties, paid their respects to Vijayakanth’s body as it was taken to his residence in Saligramam, Chennai, and later to the DMD headquarters in Coimbatore. The void created by his passing was highlighted by Prime Minister Modi, who reminisced about the conversations he had with Vijayakanth and praised his dedication to the people of Tamil Nadu.

Other political leaders, including governors and union ministers, have also expressed their heartfelt condolences following the news of Vijayakanth’s passing. His death marks the end of an era in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, leaving behind an indelible legacy.
