BUENOS AIRES.- The General Confederation of Labor, the main trade union center in Argentina, called on union members to hold a protest against the reforms promoted by the Government of Javier Milei.

“On the 24th we are going to carry out a strike with mobilization in Congress to support those deputies and senators who tell us that this cannot happen in Argentina,” said Héctor Daer, general secretary.

This decision was announced after the new Government sent to Congress a bill with more than 600 articles that give the Executive legislative powers in economic, fiscal, tariff and even electoral matters, in addition to punishing demonstrations.

“There is neither need nor urgency to appear with so many articles that turn the administrative matrix of our country upside down,” said the union leader about the proposal sent to Parliament.

Another of the CGT leaders, Pablo Moyano, stated that they will be in the streets. “They (Milei) were voted to govern and the workers voted for us to defend them,” he added.

This strike announced by the CGT contemplates a massive mobilization to the National Congress and the details will be defined in a plenary meeting that will take place on January 10.

Just this Wednesday the unions showed their strength, holding a protest in the center of Buenos Aires to repudiate a megadecree that Milei signed with more than 300 reforms that dismantle the State.

These protests gathered more than 20,000 people, according to figures from the organizers, who also reported that six were arrested during an operation.
