The iconic 1928 version of Mickey Mouse, known as Steamboat Willie, is set to enter the public domain, despite Disney’s attempts to protect its copyright for the beloved character. This also includes the earliest version of Minnie, who appeared alongside Mickey in the original animation.

The expiry of the copyright is regulated by US copyright law, which stipulates a 95-year period for copyright ownership. Despite Disney’s lobbying efforts, they were unable to extend the copyright beyond this timeframe. The process of works transitioning into the public domain allows for community theaters and youth musical groups to perform certain pieces without having to pay a fee.

While the original 1928 version of Mickey Mouse will become part of the public domain, modern iterations of the character are still protected under the law. However, Disney has stated that they will closely monitor interpretations of the characters. The company will continue to maintain the rights to the more modern versions of Mickey and other copyrighted works.

In addition to the Mickey Mouse copyright expiring, numerous other copyrighted works will also enter the public domain in 2024, including literary works, musical compositions, and sound recordings from 1923. This includes prominent works such as “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” and “The Threepenny Opera.”

Apart from the copyright battle, Disney has also been embroiled in other legal disputes, including a contentious fight with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over the Reedy Creek Improvement District, where Disneyworld is located. The company has also faced challenges related to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the wake of political developments in Florida.

With the expiration of the Steamboat Willie copyright, Mickey Mouse’s original appearance will become part of the public domain, allowing for new opportunities for creative use and interpretations of the beloved character.
