Motorists have become accustomed to it: not all traffic lanes are necessarily open to them. Some are reserved for buses and taxis, others for low-emission vehicles, and still others dedicated to carpooling, that is to say drivers with a certain number of passengers on board (at least two). Marked by a sign with a white diamond on a blue background, we find them on highways, on the outskirts of large cities, perhaps soon on the Paris ring road. Yes but… Some drivers take advantage of the opportunity and slip through without having the right to it on these roads where the traffic, most of the time, is much smoother.

If the latter are liable to a fixed fine of 135 euros, the checks by the police and gendarmes are random. “The fine hurts, it remains dissuasive, but there is not an agent on all the reserved lanes in France, and some motorists in a hurry take the risk,” summarizes an official from the Ministry of Transport. To remedy this, the government wants to automate part of the process of fining drivers who do not respect these restrictions.
