The 44-year-old faces charges of murder, attempted murder, illegal carrying of weapons and possession of weapons. Apologizes at noon on Saturday.

Wearing bulletproof vest and under draconian security measures, the 44-year-old Norwegian who stabbed the 32-year-old policeman to death in a bar in the city was found in the Thessaloniki courts.

The public prosecutor brought criminal charges against him for two felonies and two misdemeanors. The felonies concern the acts of manslaughter, committed and attempted (the second for wounding the best man and best friend of the deceased), while the misdemeanors are related to the illegal carrying and use of weapons and concern the palm knife, with which he committed the crime.

The 44-year-old was referred to apologize to the 4th ordinary investigator of Thessaloniki, from whom he got a deadline for tomorrow, at 12 noon, and remains in custody.

Through his lawyer, he expressed his condolences to the policeman’s family, stressing that he did not act with homicidal intent. He also cited intoxication due to the consumption of alcohol, but also psychiatric problems that he claims he is dealing with, for which he allegedly receives a benefit from the Norwegian state. Regarding the issue of his alleged mental illness, he asked the investigator to order a relevant expert opinion.

It is noted that the accused, yesterday, he said he was devastated upon learning of the death of the policeman and during the preliminary interrogation he claimed that he had no intention to kill and that he was under the influence of intoxication.

He also stated that he has been in Greece for at least nine years and that he lives on a pension granted to him by the Norwegian state for mental health reasons. The results of the hematological and toxicological tests to which the Norwegian was submitted are awaited. Regarding the knife, he reportedly said that he carries it with him for self-defense.

According to the evidence obtained from the forensic report the unfortunate policeman died instantly as he received severe trauma to the left cervical region.
