“There is a lesson to be learned from the fact that two out of three of the films that won at the box office in Italy in 2023 – in order of takings ‘There’s Still Tomorrow’ by Paola Cortellesi, ‘Barbie’ by Greta Gerwig and Oppenheimer’ by Christopher Nolan – are directed by women: we expect new and surprising ones, with quality and successful products signed by female directors”. This is the hope of Francesco Rutelli, president of Anica, interviewed by time.news after the news of the ‘overtaking’ recorded yesterday at the box office by Cortellesi’s film, which according to Cinetel data is the feature film that has grossed the most in Italian cinemas and also in light of the fact that next year there will be ‘only’ 14 out of 52 Italian films directed by women.
Rutelli observes, in general: “There is some positive news: after the Covid crisis, the general public has started talking about cinema again, as well as having returned, with encouraging numbers so far, to cinemas. The merit, in my opinion , is precisely of the three films mentioned: Cortellesi did a great job and encountered profound sensitivities in contemporary Italy with a black and white film set almost 80 years ago; ‘Oppenheimer’ made us reflect on ‘explosive’ events of the twentieth century; ‘ Barbie’ was able to involve a different audience, especially young people and women.”
The president of Anica underlines that “people want to talk to each other again, also thanks to cinema, perhaps bored by superheroes or repetitive comedies… In recent years, it has been up to series on platforms and TV to stimulate popular curiosity; I hope that this will also make the distracted understand that the cinema and audiovisual sectors form integrated industries, in constant competition, which must also think of international audiences.
