A little over a month ago, the new ministers went to La Moncloa and posed for the first family photo of the current Executive of Pedro Sánchez. Less than forty days have passed since that moment. And that is how long it took for the first farewell to take place.

Nadia Calviño has left her portfolio to direct the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the President of the Government has had to restructure: María Jesús Montero reinforces her weight in the Executive and becomes first vice president and Sánchez’s right-hand woman. By climbing one more step in the Council of Ministers, Montero becomes, in addition to the number two of the PSOE, the number two of the Government.

The Minister of Finance has also remained at Sánchez’s side since the beginning. She was key in the negotiations for Sánchez’s investiture and in the dialogue with the independentistas. It seems that Pedro Sánchez wanted to reward this task with a promotion, placing Montero above Yolanda Díaz.

“We’re going to give it our all…”

This Friday, Calviño said goodbye to the Executive, describing his replacement as “María Jesús, my sister.” “We are going to do our best to make it possible for this project to move forward,” Montero replied this Friday when he received the portfolio.

With this reorganization, the fourth vice presidency of the Government, which Montero held until now, disappears. Thus, the vice presidencies become three, as reported by Pedro Sáncez.

Likewise, José Luis Escrivá’s ministry also gains powers: in addition to Digital Transformation, it will now also be in charge of the Public Function area, which until now was the responsibility of the Treasury. And the Economy, Commerce and Business portfolio, previously chaired by Calviño, will be headed by Carlos Body.

Despite the structural changes, Pedro Sánchez maintains balance in his Government. Right now there are eleven men and eleven women in his Council of Ministers. A Council of Ministers that, most likely, will continue to fluctuate throughout this legislature.
