The last trading day of the year on Friday ended on a negative note as the BSE Sensex lost 170 points for the first time. Despite this, the stock market has seen a 20 percent rise this year.

Global market cues were mixed, which had an impact on the domestic market as well. The domestic market, which had been on a five-day bullish streak, recorded a profit. Auto, FMCG, metal, and realty stocks received minor support, while IT, banking, and energy sector stocks faced heavy selling.

Market capitalization rose by Rs 1.29 lakh crore to Rs 364.29 lakh crore at the close of trading. Foreign corporate investors bought shares worth Rs 4,358.99 crore and domestic companies bought shares worth Rs 136.64 crore on Thursday.

The Sensex opened at 72,351.59 and fell 58.79 points to end at 72,082.64. It later touched a high of 72,417.01 but eventually lost 170.12 points (0.23 percent) to close at 72,240.26. Out of a total volume of 3,891 traded on the BSE, 1,990 shares gained, 1,794 shares fell, and 107 stocks remained unchanged. Thirteen stocks on the Sensex were gainers, including Tata Motors (3.52 percent), while 17 stocks, including SBI, Infosys, Titan, and Tech Mahindra, were in the fall list.

The 50-cap NSE Nifty opened at 21,737.65 and closed at 21,676.90, down 41.05 points in the morning. It later touched a high of 21,770.30 and ended up 47.30 points (1.00 percent) at 21,654.75. A total of 1,117 stocks were gainers, and 1,012 stocks were losers in the national stock market. In the Nifty list, 18 stocks were on the gainer list, and 31 stocks were on the decliner list.
