December 29, 2023 became a very special date because the Wellness Megapharmacy. This is one of the most ambitious projects of the AMLO government to end the shortage of medicines. But how does it work and what are its main characteristics?
Since the middle of the year, the construction of what would be the largest pharmacy in the world. After analyzing several options, an empty work was chosen in Huehuetoca, State of Mexico, to build this space to store and send medicines to all public hospitals in the country. Has a surface of 94,546 m² and will protect 286 million pieces and 1,806 medication keys.
Wellbeing Megapharmacy, the solution to medication shortages?
From the beginning of his mandate, the president promised to offer free care and medications. Although the reality is that recently complaints have increased within the public sector regarding the lack of drugs to fill patients’ prescriptions. Although according to AMLO that will no longer happen thanks to this ambitious project.
“It doesn’t matter if they are expensive or if they are rare and cannot be found. That, although they are expensive, you can count on them in any part of the country, whether you are rich or poor. (…) All medicines are free, they don’t cost anything, they don’t even charge for shipping. That is the ideal that today we are beginning to turn into reality, this dream that we had and that we want to make a reality, the right to health.”
How can you request medications at the Wellbeing Megapharmacy?
As of today, the operators of the command, communication, control and intelligence center are now enabled. The only way to request medications is through the telephone line: 55 95 00 09 11.
The number is exclusive for beneficiaries who request a missing medication in their medical prescription issued by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in its ordinary regime, the IMSS Bienestar or the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE) .
Once the data is captured there is a commitment to send the missing medication in less than 48 hours to the patient’s hospital where the shortage was recorded.
“We are talking about 20 thousand units throughout the country that will be supplied from this distribution center in Huehuetoca, plus the pharmacy. In the case of the pharmacy it is to complement. The medicines will be in the health centers, in the medical units, in the hospitals, but if a person, a patient, arrives and there is no medicine, we will be able to talk to that distribution center, to the pharmacy and that’s it. There are teams of public servants, women and men, receiving the call. There are representatives of the ISSSTE, the Insurance (IMSS) and the IMSS Bienestar; The IMSS Bienestar is everything related to the Ministry of Health, those who do not have social security, those who are not beneficiaries of the Insurance, of the ISSSTE.”
The Chief Executive reiterated that the medicines will be transported by land or air to the 32 states.
AMLO’s commitments for 2024
The president promised to return to Huehuetoca in March to verify the proper functioning of the Megapharmacy for Wellbeing.
With the Undersecretary of Expenditures of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, Juan Pablo de Botton Falcón, the president reported that in 2024 the budget that the Government of Mexico will allocate for the people will be nine billion pesos.
He recalled that the pension for adults over 65 years of age will be 6 thousand pesos every two months; Additionally, scholarship programs for students at all school levels and pensions for people with disabilities will continue, which are already provided to people from 0 to 64 years of age in the State of Mexico.
He wished the residents of the entity a happy 2024 and predicted that it will be a good year because the Government of Mexico brought order to the country, put an end to corruption and fairly manages the budget.
