A celebrity party caused a huge controversy in Russia. Guests were almost naked at Moscow’s Mutabor nightclub, which left the dictator Vladimir Putin irritated.

Rapper Nikolai Vasilyev, who attended the event wearing only a sock to hide his private parts, was arrested and sentenced to 15 days in prison. Sponsors of some of the country’s best-known artists canceled their contracts.

The party took place amid increased repression by authorities.

Putin and negative repercussions

‘Almost naked’ party

The party was organized by blogger Anastasia Ivleeva, known as Nastya, who has more than 18 million followers on Instagram.

The event was attended by famous singers, who were dressed in minimal costumes and have been a constant presence on state TV entertainment programs for years.

Nastya appeared in a video at the party showing off an emerald-studded chain around her buttocks. The jewelry costs US$251,000 (R$1.2 million).

On December 20th and 21st, she published two videos apologizing. Emotional, the blogger said she was sorry for her actions and hopes to receive “a second chance”.

Tax authorities have opened an investigation against Nastya that could lead to a five-year prison sentence.

A Moscow court accepted a lawsuit filed by the League for a Safe Internet in Russia, which demands that the blogger pay the equivalent of R$53 million for “moral suffering”.

If the case wins, the entity, which was founded with support from authorities, intends for the money to go to a state fund that supports war veterans in Ukraine.

The scandal comes at a time when Putin, who hopes to comfortably win another six-year term in an election in March.

The case ended up reinforcing social conservatism, after Russia’s Supreme Court ruled that activists from the pro Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) movement should be classified as “extremists”.
