Airbus has never recorded so many orders in one year. With more than 1,800 aircraft orders recorded in 2023, the European group once again ends the year as world leader, ahead of its competitor Boeing. An assessment driven by the very significant increase in air travel over the past two years.

In December alone, Airbus recorded 500 aircraft orders, for almost $80 billion in total.

And before that, the year had already been good, driven in particular by orders from companies in emerging countries, such as India or Turkey, which anticipate an increase in travel by the middle classes in the years to come.

The European manufacturer therefore ends 2023 with nearly 1,900 orders on the clock. Almost twice those recorded by Boeing, its great rival. The American aircraft manufacturer is still weighed down by the defects recorded on one of its models: the 737 Max. After two crashes recorded since 2018, a new defect was noted this week by the American civil aviation authority.

But Airbus’ results need to be qualified: behind this record order book, the big question is knowing when the manufacturer will be able to deliver the planes. Today, it can take ten years between the announcement of a sale and the actual delivery of the devices. The sector lacks labor and, since the Covid pandemic, supply difficulties are frequent for certain parts.
