Finally, Podemos will not participate in the elections with Sumar, but will do so individually in the Galician elections on February 18. The party’s bases have largely rejected the agreement that Yolanda Díaz’s platform had announced a few days ago. According to the data that have been made public today, 62.36% are against running under the Sumar label compared to 36.5% who voted in favor and 1.39% who voted blank.

It was last February 27 when Yolanda Díaz presented Marta Lois, president of Sumar and spokesperson in Congress, as her head of the list to consolidate the results obtained by the movement in the past general elections in Galicia. During that presentation she announced an agreement in principle to compete with Izquierda Unida and Podemos in coalition, however, from the beginning she had doubts about this possibility.

Even more so when the former vice president of the Government and former leader of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, pointed out that “the best decision they can make (in Galicia) is to reject the coalition with Sumar and ask for the vote for the BNG.” He took the opportunity to ask for a vote for the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) in an article published on the portal he directs, Canal Red, in which he considered “even worse” the agreement offer that Díaz’s party has transferred to the Galician federation of Podemos in a comparison with the one they signed for the last general elections. “They make the same mistakes again,” he states in an article titled “Should Podemos Galicia go to the elections with Sumar?” In Iglesias’ opinion, the name of the purple party disappears from the candidacy and the candidate, Marta Lois, still spokesperson for Sumar in Congress and former councilor of the Mareas in the Santiago de Compostela City Council, would prevail without primaries. After the decision of the bases, it seems that those registered show their discomfort with the training led by Yolanda Díaz and are closer to Iglesias’ postulates.

The bases of Podemos Galicia have also ruled on the primaries to elect the candidacy for the elections and the head of the list, where the official ‘Transform Galicia’ list, headed by the former councilor, has won with 41.66% of the votes. from A Coruña Isabel Faraldo, on the critical list ‘Rexurdir Galicia’ that achieves 34.66% of the support of the organization’s bases. In this case there has been a significant volume of blank votes, specifically, 23.68% of the final vote.

The pre-agreement that had been forged reserved for the purples the second place in the constituency for A Coruña and the first for Lugo, as well as the third for Orense and the fourth for Pontevedra, while Sumar takes first place in Coruña and Pontevedra. , with more possibilities of obtaining a seat. In addition, the head of the list, in this case Marta Lois, was left to Sumar, as well as the electoral brand and the parliamentary spokesperson of the future parliamentary group. And together with this, Podemos’s commitment to remain in said group throughout the legislature was made explicit, after the fracture at the state level in Congress.

The formation led by Yolanda Díaz has reacted to the decision. They have regretted the decision of the Podemos Galicia bases to reject the electoral coalition pre-agreement for the 18F elections and are now focused on being key to political change in this community. “We regret the decision. We have done what we should,” sources from Sumar told Europa Press, after learning that 62.36% of the purple party’s membership has opposed a joint list with Sumar at this electoral event.

From the formation led by Yolanda Díaz they have emphasized that there is a “historic opportunity” on 18F to “remove Galicia from paralysis” and for “air to flow in the Xunta”, in reference to the objective of unseating the PP from the autonomous government. Therefore, from Sumar they have already proclaimed that they are turning to the electoral contest. “We are for that and only that,” they have emphasized to turn the page after Podemos Galicia’s decision.

For her part, the leader of Podemos, Ione Belarra, has highlighted that the party’s militancy in Galicia has said “loud and clear” that the purple formation must be present in the 18F elections and its political project must be “respected.” In this sense, Belarra has emphasized that in its formation the important decisions are made by the people and, consequently, a “vast majority” of those registered has said “loud and clear” that Podemos’s transformative project has to be present in the next Galician elections”. The general secretary of the purples has also conveyed her congratulations to the former councilor of A Coruña Isabel Faraldo, the most voted in the internal primaries to elect candidates for 18F, and has highlighted that she is the “best” headliner.
