KINSHASA – Several candidates for the presidential elections of December 20, 2023 wanted to organize a demonstration this Wednesday, December 26 to contest the results. But such a march was banned by the Kinshasa authorities for security reasons. A police source refers to a decision by the Kinshasa provincial government.

“We held four meetings, and the last, that of the provincial governor, banned any demonstration in the city of Kinshasa for security reasons,” confirmed divisional commissioner Blaise Kilimbambalimba, provincial police commissioner for the city of Kinshasa.

“Shortly before, the authority in charge of national security also spoke out on this subject, and this concerns all the provinces of the Republic,” he said after an orientation meeting and instructions which brought together around the general commissioner of the Congolese National Police (PNC), the main divisional commissioner Benjamin Alongaboni, the commanders of large units, directors and heads of central services directly involved in securing the elections.

“No demonstrations are authorized for Wednesday,” insisted the provincial police commissioner. He asked the population of Kinshasa to go about their daily activities in complete freedom, affirming that the police will take steps to enforce the decision of the provincial authority. “We are taking this opportunity to ask all Kinshasa residents to freely go about their business. We will take steps to ensure that this is respected.”

”Zero deaths, zero injuries” during the vote

The Congolese national police also congratulated themselves for their “Zero deaths, zero injuries” results during the December 20 elections, held throughout the national territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The main divisional commissioner Benjamin Alongaboni, general commissioner of the PNC, on the occasion of this orientation meeting and instructions, congratulated the services directly involved in securing the elections, for the proof of professionalism achieved by all the units and police services in view of this positive assessment.

He instructed them to continue with the same momentum of professionalism coupled with respect for human rights in continuing operations to secure the electoral process. It must be said that this demonstration was planned while several other voices were being raised to demand the cancellation of these elections of December 20 where several irregularities and frauds were recorded by observers and witnesses of the candidates.
