Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Three Kings Day… These are dates when we buy a lot, consume a lot and give more. Boxes, packages and wrappers multiply, and so do trips to containers.
And separating this type of waste is very simple, the colors of the containers help us orient ourselves. In fact, last year we broke the record, recycling more than 1.6 million tons of plastic packaging, cans, cartons and cardboard. Still, we continue to have doubts.
For example, the roscón box, which contains one part of plastic and another of cardboard, where should we deposit it, in the containers and plastics or in the cardboard? Cristina Muñoz, communication coordinator at Ecoembes, resolves the doubt: “The ideal would be to separate the two parts, putting what is plastic in the yellow container and what is paper in the blue container.”
Therefore, we have room for improvement. Another example, the small cover of the plastic container of some custard, where do we take it? The correct answer is that it should go in the yellow bin.
But what about washing the containers, should we do it? The ideal is to empty the container, but you do not need to wash it so that it can be recycled: “It is important that you use the product before putting it in the yellow container, but in no case do you have to wash it because you are wasting resources, an unnecessary waste of water,” explains the expert.
We should also not pack the containers in the yellow container to save space. At most, they can be folded so that they take up less space in the container.
The same happens with cardboard boxes, which before placing them in the blue container we should fold them so that they take up less space and thus prevent the containers from overflowing.
