1.89 Lakh Policemen Deployed in Bangladesh Ahead of General Elections

Dhaka: With the announcement of a boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party of the upcoming general elections on January 7, security measures have been heightened across the country. A total of 1.89 lakh policemen have been deployed to ensure the safety and security of the public and to prevent any potential incidents ahead of the elections.

The main opposition party has cited concerns about the fairness of the elections, calling for the establishment of a neutral organization to oversee the electoral process. However, their request was not granted, leading to the decision to boycott the elections.

Out of the total police force of 2.13 lakh personnel in the Bangladesh Police Department, 1.89 lakh officers are now focused on election-related duties. Of these, 1.74 lakh will be on duty without leave, with the remaining 15,000 officers continuing with regular duties.

In addition to the heightened police presence, extra measures are being taken to monitor troubled areas, with surveillance operations being conducted in ‘Mupdi’.

Given the boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the absence of other major opposition parties, it is widely anticipated that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League will secure victory for the fourth consecutive time and form the government following the elections on January 7.
