Bilbao has breathed athletics this Sunday, New Year’s Eve. 3,000 athletes, according to the organization, have put on their running shoes and taken to the streets of the town to make room for the delicacies of the night, sausages, fish, meats, grapes and nougat. With its competitive component, this 6.6 kilometer San Silvestre also has the party ingredient typical of the last hours of the year, so the fastest have been joined by people eager to have a good time, with costumes and without rush to break the times. Not at all. Despite the rain with which the city woke up, the sun accompanied the participants.
In the men’s category, Kristian Quinstans, from Club Deportivo Bilbao, has won. The second position went to Jon Pascual, from Club Atlético Getxo, and the third to Juan Abaitua, a member of La Blanca. Among the women, Nerea Iturriaga has won. For their part, Esther Fernández, from the Ezkerraldea club, and Jone García, from Sekulebedarra Kirol Kluba, finished second and third, respectively.

At 4:30 p.m., the race started from Rekalde Square, a way to pay tribute to Iturrigorri, the neighborhood’s soccer team, in celebration of its centenary. The goal? In the same place. In this way, this place has been recovered as a starting point, unlike in the most recent editions, when the athletes have left the Guggenheim museum. From there, they headed to Gordóniz, passed through La Casilla, Doctor Areilza, reached Gran Vía, Moyua, took Alameda Rekalde to the Plaza de Toros, passed through Amezola Park and reached the finish line in The place of origin.
And, from there, happiness. Of the winners, but also of all those who have finished the year with a race. Some, sure, will start it with aches, but all to finish 2023 in a sporting manner.
