Title: Mayor of Sderot Demands Amendment to Government’s Decision on City’s Residents

The mayor of Sderot, Alon Davidi, has taken a stand against the government’s decision to allow the return of the city’s residents after they were evacuated. Davidi turned to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, demanding an amendment to the decision made last Friday.

The government’s decision, made following the recommendation of the Minister of Defense, extended the residents’ stay in hotels until February 29, 2024, while also providing an independent occupancy grant until that date. However, residents who wish to return to the city were allowed to do so starting today, in exchange for a “return grant home for the purpose of adapting and getting organized in their homes.”

Mayor Davidi strongly criticized the decision, stating that it is “illusory” and does not address the security concerns facing the residents of Sderot. He expressed concerns about the potential threat of anti-tank fire and the presence of terrorists in the north of the Gaza Strip.

Davidi also highlighted the inconsistency in allowing residents to return when the directives of the Home Front Command do not permit the opening of educational settings. He called the decision “stupid” and urged the Prime Minister to shelve it immediately.

In his plea to the Prime Minister, Davidi emphasized the need for a comprehensive security plan that would provide long-term security for the residents of Sderot. He called for a meeting with the heads of authorities, including the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Finance, and the Chief of Staff, to develop an outline that would address the security concerns of the city’s residents.

The mayor’s impassioned plea reflects the ongoing challenges and security threats faced by the residents of Sderot, and underscores the need for a comprehensive and sustainable solution to ensure their safety and well-being.
