The earthquake that shook Japan this Monday morning was the largest of around twenty seismic movements that occurred between eight and nine thirty in the morning (according to Spanish time). According to the first analyzes it had an intensity of 7.6 on the well-known Richter scale and its hypocenter was ten kilometers deep.

The earthquake has caused the paralysis of railway services, the review of nuclear reactors in the area and “a major tsunami alert”, a warning that indicates the possibility of waves of up to five meters high and that implies the evacuation of some places.

Parts of the coast have already been hit by smaller waves and more waves are expected in the coming hours. The authorities have also confirmed the arrival of waves in the prefectures of Yamagata, Niigata and Toyama. It is the first alert of this type to be declared in Japan since the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 2011.

Electricity companies have announced that some 30,000 users have been left without supply after the earthquake, but none of the country’s nuclear power plants have been affected.
