César Romero was Batman’s first Joker. Despite his long career, he always had to live his sexuality in secret. That forced him to lead a double life to avoid losing jobs.
Thirty years ago, a few hours after 1994 began, César Romero died in his home in Los Angeles. He was 86 years old and had more than 65 years of artistic career. He participated in hundreds of films and television series and was also a great entertainer of California show business. But for everyone, especially for those who are over fifty today, he will always be the Joker, the first Joker, one of the great super villains in the history of television, the one who laughed wildly in the Batman of the sixties, the series between pop and naive headed by Adam West.

Despite his immense fame, contacts and profuse social activity, Romero always lived part of his life in the shadows. He was one of the many homosexual actors who could not show themselves as such, openly, so that the public and the industry would not reject them. César Romero at a certain point was an exception, he had a gesture of rebellion, he exercised a resistance that others could not or did not want to: he refused to simulate a marriage with a woman to remove suspicions of homosexuality. He preferred to remove the imposture.
Despite his name and appearance, César was a New Yorker. He was born in Manhattan in 1907. To a Spanish father and a Cuban mother, he had a peaceful and needless childhood and adolescence. The family sugar import business was very profitable. When he reached 20 he moved to Los Angeles. He wanted to succeed in show business. He was an extraordinary dancer. He had never studied but learned by watching the greats on Broadway stages. The Crash of ’29 collapsed the family economy. But at that point, César was already earning a living and he was able to support his parents for a few years until they got back on their feet.
He was tall, with a seductive look and an overwhelming attitude. He always smiled, he seemed to live in good spirits. His appearance and personal charm opened many doors for her. At parties he was the center of attention and that began to give him possibilities in the world of cinema.
