The Italian government immobilized the humanitarian ship Ocean Viking for 20 days in the port of Bari (southeast), after accusing the ship of changing its direction after having carried out some rescues, the NGO SOS Méditerrannée announced this Sunday.

“The Ocean Viking is detained for the second time in two months and ends the year as it began, with an obstruction to its humanitarian assistance at sea due to a useless, arbitrary and discriminatory law,” the NGO denounced in a statement, with headquarters in Marseille, in the southeast of France.

The Italian executive of the right-wing Giorgia Meloni, according to SOS Méditerrannée, accuses the Ocean Viking of “not having respected the order to proceed without delay and with maximum speed towards a safe place”, specifically, the port of Bari, which had been designated by the Italian authorities.

The boat rescued 244 migrants near the coast of Libya on Wednesday in three operations in the Mediterranean, among whom were eight women, 18 unaccompanied minors and four children under 4 years old.
