Good vintage for automobiles in France. In 2023, the French market jumped by 16.07%. In total, 1,774,729 new passenger cars were put into circulation, according to figures published this Monday by the Automobile Platform (PFA), which represents manufacturers and equipment manufacturers. “The crucial problem of the lack of electronic components, following the war between Russia and Ukraine, is disappearing,” observes François Roudier, communications manager for the PFA, who sees in these good results “a year positive, especially for Renault.” If Stellantis (Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Opel, Jeep) remains at the top of sales with 27.4% market share, it only progresses by 1.8% and sees Renault returning in its rearview mirror with 24.6% of sales, an increase of 18.3%.

The Clio, the best-seller of the French diamond brand created in 1990, has returned to the top of the best-seller charts. With 97,471 put into circulation in 2023, it regains first place ahead of the Peugeot 208, the darling of the segment in 2022. How can we explain the success of this small city car compared to its rival from Peugeot? “Difficult to say, it depends above all on the sales strategy of the manufacturers, on the commercial positioning in European countries. Perhaps Peugeot preferred to push its all-electric model in France,” explains François Roudier.

For 2024, Renault intends to take its share in the market for small, popular all-electric cars with the return of the R5, presented and launched this year. Renault marketing has already advanced its pawns: a 150 euro skip-the-line to reserve the car for purchase. “At the beginning, there will not be large volumes. We must first create attraction,” explains François Roudier. In 2023, electric cars represented 17% of registrations in 2023, they increased by 47% compared to 2022. The Automotive Platform expert is convinced of this: “The movement towards electrification is underway. »
