The ‘Pedroche effect’ has been almost completely diluted in Euskadi. The collaborator of ‘Zapeando’, who celebrated her tenth anniversary by broadcasting the Chimes from Puerta del Sol, has not only ceased to be the preferred option of the Basques but has lost half of the viewers she attracted last year. According to Kantar Media data released by Barlovento Comunicación, Antena 3 goes from being the undisputed leader in Euskadi in 2022 with 352,000 viewers and a 40.5% screen share to being the second option with 182,000 viewers – almost half – and a 24.9% share during the minute of eating the twelve grapes.

The big winners of the night were Ramontxu, Ana Mena and Jennifer Hermoso. The trio chosen by TVE triumphed in Euskadi. They accumulated 185,000 viewers, 7,000 more than a year ago when they dispensed with Anne Igartiburu – the only Basque representative at that time – and obtained 4.8 points more audience share. They went from 20.5% share in 2022 to 25.3% this year. Only one chain experiences a greater rise, and it is ETB2.

África Baeta, Ane Ibarzabal and Egoitz Txurruka were the third option chosen by the Basques to eat the grapes. The announcement of Ibarzabal’s pregnancy mobilized part of the audience and returned Basque public television to the podium of the most watched channels during the Chimes. The Spanish-language channel attracted 107,000 viewers – 22,000 more than a year ago – and it was the channel that grew the most compared to the previous year with 4.9 points more audience share. The increase in viewership on ETB also transferred to its main channel in Basque. ETB1 scored a 7.5% share. It was the fifth most watched network with 55,000 viewers, six thousand more than a year ago but far from the 94,000 viewers they gathered during New Year’s Eve 2021.

Other networks that lost viewers were La Sexta and Telecinco, which is still not raising its head in Euskadi. Atresmedia’s second channel left more than 20,000 viewers along the way and was surpassed by ETB2. Telecinco did worse, worsening the poor data from the previous year. Half of the audience was left and it went from 44,000 viewers to 24,000.

In general terms, the Chimes were less watched than in 2022. 132,000 fewer Basques turned on the television to eat the grapes and usher in the new year. A figure that is in line with the global data for the rest of the country. In Spain, 16.3 million viewers were registered, 814,000 less than the previous year.

The Pedroche effect loses steam

Also in the rest of the country, a fatigue with Cristina Pedroche was perceived, although the data is not as conclusive as in Euskadi. Antena 3 once again led the Chimes for the third consecutive year, but left one million viewers and five points of audience share along the way. At 00:00, when the country drank the twelve grapes, a total of 5,608,000 people and 34.4% of ‘share’ connected with Antena 3 to welcome 2024. Just one minute before, the program recorded its peak audience with 5,745,000 viewers and 35.4%, when the presenter showed Spain her set for the end of the year, according to data published in a GECA report.

On this occasion, TVE once again settled for the silver medal, although it significantly improved its audience data. RTVE entrusted Ramón García and his classic cape (which took a while to appear on screen in the hands of the soccer player) to stay on the emblematic balcony of Puerta del Sol with the artist Ana Mena as presenter. Minutes before the twelve grapes, the soccer player and world champion Jennifer Hermoso appeared on screen with a congratulatory message that also brought with her a wish in favor of equality in 2024.

The experiment, which broke the inertia of the bells characterized by their institutional tone, resulted in 3,890,000 spectators (about 167,000 more than last year) and a 26.1% (increase of 2.5 points). At the exact moment of the twelve grapes, the audience rose to 4,396,000 followers and 27%. Despite everything, the RTVE group does achieve the most watched broadcast of the night with the sum of all the corporation’s channels (4,639,000 and 31.1%). It is worth highlighting the good result that La 2 also obtained (606,000 and 4.1% followers).

The setback on New Year’s Eve, as in Euskadi, was suffered by Telecinco: only 1,185,000 viewers and 8% took the grapes from Seville with the presenting couple formed by Marta Flich and Jesús Calleja. Mediaset’s opted this time to focus its broadcast on the main channel and left Cuatro viewers without any bells (the broadcast of the ‘First Dates’ special continued in front of 0.8% of the audience). For its part, La Sexta gathered 727,000 followers and 4.8% of the audience with Cristina Pardo and Dani Mateo.
