ORCAU: Amsterdam UMC Establishes Center for Organoid Research
Amsterdam UMC has recently established the Organoid Center Amsterdam University Medical Centers (ORCAU) to bring together fourteen different labs working on organoid and tumoroid research. Organoids, which are three-dimensional cell cultures, have become a hot topic in medical research in recent years, and the establishment of ORCAU aims to prevent redundancy and promote collaboration in this rapidly evolving field.
Maarten Bijlsma, a researcher in the laboratory for Experimental Molecular Medicine at Amsterdam UMC, explained the concept of organoids and their significance in medical research. He emphasized that organoids are not exact replicas of real organs but rather complex cell cultures with properties similar to the original organ. In the case of cancer research, Bijlsma’s lab focuses on growing tumoroids from patients with cancer to test the effects of different drugs on specific tumors.
Bijlsma also mentioned the potential of organoids and tumoroids in reducing the use of laboratory animals for drug testing. He pointed out that these cell cultures could serve as alternatives to traditional in vivo testing, potentially saving the lives of many laboratory animals in the future.
However, while organoids and tumoroids offer promising opportunities for medical research, there are still challenges to be addressed. Bijlsma expressed the need for further improvement in culturing methods for different organs, such as the pancreas, in order to advance research in specific areas.
The collaboration of fourteen labs in ORCAU reflects a growing interest and investment in organoid research within Amsterdam UMC. By sharing experiences and expertise, these labs aim to advance the understanding and application of organoids and tumoroids in medical research.
