The Cuban writer, historian and essayist, Newton Briones Montoto, lost his life in circumstances that are still under investigation. According to multiple sources on social networks, he would have been the victim of a homicide in Havana.

The incident has generated various versions regarding the circumstances surrounding the death. Some sources maintain that it was an argument that escalated until it culminated in a murder.

One version suggests that the 82-year-old writer was assaulted while taking his daily walk on 5th Avenue, while another maintains that he was involved in a fight that ended in assault.

In this second scenario, a passerby would have found Montoto unconscious on the street, which led to a prompt alert to the authorities and his subsequent transfer to a nearby hospital.

Likewise, it has been said that the incident occurred a few days ago in the morning. Part of these versions have been shared by journalist Carlos Cabrera Pérez from his Facebook account.

Newton Briones Montoto was a prominent intellectual, recognized for his work as a historian and essayist. He published several books on crucial topics in Cuban history, including the controversial Marquitos caselinked to the disclosure of the location of a group of assailants at the Presidential Palace and Radio Reloj of the Revolutionary Directorate who were hidden in a house located on Humboldt Street.

Cabrera Pérez described him as a very intelligent and honest person, capable of telling the facts as they were, regardless of the consequences.

The communicator also recalled that the victim was the founder of State Security, but in 1989 he resigned from the Ministry of the Interior. “Before he died, he had finished a volume on the death of Jesús Menéndez that refutes the official story,” he explained.

The cultural and literary community also mourned the loss of the intellectual. The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) echoed the shocking event, expressing its regret and describing the writer as an outstanding member of the historical and social literature section.

A post dedicated to the historian was also written in the La Joven Cuba profile. “He was a great connoisseur of the republican period, mainly of the Authentic Party and the figure of Eduardo Chibás. His analysis, far from any dogmatism, was characterized by unraveling little-known figures and events in Cuban history and their connection with the present,” the publication says.
