Antigua: The Indian youth team reached the semifinals of the ICC U-19 World Cup 2022. India defeated defending champions Bangladesh in the quarter-finals. Opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s superb batting helped India cross the 112-run target on the bowlers’ track. India reached the target in 30.5 overs for the loss of five wickets. India will face Australia in the semi-finals.

Score: Bangladesh U19 111 (SM Mehroob 30; Ravikumar 3/14)
India U19 117/5 (Ankrish Krish Raghuvanshi 44; Ripon Montol 4/31)

On a difficult surface for batting, Indian captain Yash Dul decided to bowl first in the toss. Strike bowler Ravi Kumar took three wickets in the first five overs to stun Bangladesh as they could not recover. Left-arm spinner Vicky Ostwall took two wickets in one over, crushing Bangladesh to 37/5 in 15.4 overs to reach the 2020 Champions Bowl below 100.

SM Mehroob and Ashiqur Rahman put on 50 for the eighth wicket to put Bangladesh ahead by 100 runs. As they batted, it was hoped that Bangladesh would be able to put up a fighting score, but Mehroob was out for 30 as Bangladesh ended the innings at 111 in 37.1 overs. For India, Ravi took three wickets for 14 runs while Vicky took two wickets for 25 runs.

Bangladesh were outscored by a small margin but were not ready to concede defeat immediately. Tanzim Hasan Saqib gave Bangladesh a good start by taking the wicket of opener Harnoor Singh. It was difficult to score runs at the start of the Indian innings, with Raghuvanshi and vice-captain Sheikh Rashid anchored in the Indian camp. Soon they began to score boundaries with ease.

Though Raghuvanshi looked set to score a half-century, his attempt to attack further was reduced to 44 in his innings when he was caught by Ripon Montol. Raghuvanshi added 70 runs for the second wicket with Rashid.

But with Montol’s onslaught, India’s leading batting collapsed. At one point, India were reduced to 82/4 and then to 97/5. Dhool, however, scored 20 not out off 26 balls to give India a comfortable victory. Vicky Tambe, who was unbeaten on 11, smashed a six off Bangladesh captain Rakibul Hasan to seal India’s victory.

India will take on Australia in the Super League semi-final on Wednesday.
