The Minister of Transportation and Communications has announced important details about the construction of an underground station of the Lima Metro, which will be located near the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM). This infrastructure will be part of the extensive Line 2 network, which will run from Ate to Callao, and will consist of a total of 27 stations.

The construction of this underground station is expected news for thousands of people—including students, teachers, administrative workers and neighbors—who will benefit from the improvement in transportation service. The minister highlighted that the project seeks to facilitate mobility and accessibility within the city, while contributing to the reduction of traffic and pollution.

Raúl Pérez Reyes, Minister of Transportation and Communications (MTC), announced to the Andina Agency that his portfolio is in negotiations with representatives of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos —known as the Dean of America— to reach an agreement on the compensation for the land destined for the road infrastructure project. The current discussion focuses on determining a fair amount for the portion of the campus that will be used for this construction.

“We are talking with the authorities. I believe that there was a first attempt at an agreement, we are going to talk with them again to see if we can (reach an agreement). Here the issue is basically defining what is the legitimate compensation for the San Marcos University because we would be using land that is theirs. I believe that we are going to reach an agreement without any problem,” he said.

Both entities maintain an open dialogue seeking to resolve this issue harmoniously, while the MTC continues to plan the next steps once compensation is defined. This project represents significant progress in improving transportation infrastructure in the area and is expected to have a positive impact on both road circulation and connectivity in the city once completed.

The future San Marcos station (E-7) will be located underground in the area that includes the intersection of Germán Amézaga Avenue and Universitaria Avenue, in front of Neighborhood Unit 3, according to reports from Metro Line 2. This transportation project promises to improve connectivity and mobility in the area.

The design contemplates an underground construction that will avoid interfering with surface traffic. This is a key work in the expansion of the metro system that connects various districts, which facilitates accessibility to one of the main university sectors in the area. The choice of location has been strategic in order to meet the high demand for public transport by students and local residents.

Line 2 of the Lima and Callao Metro promises to establish a 27-kilometer underground connection. This new means of transportation will directly and efficiently link important districts such as Ate, Santa Anita, El Agustino, San Luis, La Victoria, Cercado de Lima, Breña, Bellavista, Callao and Carmen de la Legua, significantly reducing the travel time of 2 hours and 30 minutes to just 45 minutes.

However, the initiative has received harsh criticism because, in the best of cases, – as specified by the head of the MTC, Raúl Pérez, to the Andina Agency – the total work could only be completed shortly before 2028.
