The journalist was asked whether he expected an increase in hostilities for political purposes in the next two months, given that Russia will hold presidential elections in March this year.
“No, because today the main theme of Putin’s presidential campaign is the social sphere, not military action,” answers Alexey Venediktov on Live Nail. “We see that he will do without declaring military victories.

I look at what meetings he holds. And there is an endless conversation about maternity capital, social benefits, teachers’ salaries. Of course, military operations are going on in such a way that someone is preparing some kind of military “surprises”. And I think the Ukrainian side is preparing no less than the Russian side. And yet we see a blind defense on both sides.
As for further hostilities, after the presidential elections, the former editor-in-chief of Echo of Moscow responds as follows:
— There was information that Putin, in a conversation with Xi, said that Russia would fight with Ukraine for five years. I don’t know if he said that. But I think more from the point of view of a frozen conflict.
I know that a year ago Surovikin said that we should sit on the defensive and grind, because Ukrainian troops are more finite than Russian ones. If they come to such tactics, then we will have 2024 in a military sense like 2023.
And from an economic point of view, this will be catastrophic, because Ukraine has actually run out of budget. And the Russian economy is also not doing so well.
Venediktov believes that 2024 will be worse than the previous one.
“And its consequences will also be worse.” Even if Putin and Zelensky reach an agreement tomorrow, the consequences for the economy and people’s everyday lives will worsen.
Two election campaigns on the foreign policy circuit will also influence what is happening on the Russian-Ukrainian track: presidential and Senate elections in the United States, as well as elections to the European Parliament.
