The Military Police stated this Friday (5) that finding the missing helicopter on the north coast of São Paulo is like “looking for a needle in a haystack”. The color of the aircraft and the dense vegetation make it difficult to locate, according to Major Joscilênio Fernandes from the PM in a statement to CNN Brasil. He highlighted that despite training and experience, finding the gray helicopter hidden under dense trees is a considerable visual challenge.

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) has already carried out 32 hours of flights in search of the missing aircraft. Search operations complete five days today and remain complicated due to unfavorable weather conditions and mountainous terrain in the region.

The helicopter, a Robinson R44, made an emergency landing before disappearing. On board were Luciana Rodzewics, 46 years old, her daughter Letícia Ayumi Rodzewics Sakumoto, 20 years old, and Raphael Torres, a family friend. According to Silvia Santos, Luciana’s sister, it was Raphael who invited her to the trip.

Luciana recorded a video showing the takeoff and the beginning of the flight in São Paulo, shared on her social networks. Letícia also recorded a video describing the dangerous weather conditions, with a lot of fog, before they decided to return to the capital.

The helicopter, which departed from Campo de Marte airport, in São Paulo, bound for Ilhabela, lost contact at around 3:10 pm after taking off at 1:15 pm, the day before New Year’s Eve. According to Anac, the aircraft was scheduled for flights, but its operation as an air taxi was denied.
