The president of the Colombian Olympic Committee, Ciro Solano, delivered an announcement in the midst of the controversy over non-payment for the 2027 Pan American Games.
Apparently, Barranquilla could regain the venue of the games after an extraordinary meeting with Panam Sports next month.
According to Solano, after conversations with Neven Ilic, president of Panam Sports, it was decided to summon the 41 member countries of the organization to an Extraordinary Assembly in February.
“Statutorily, the sovereign assembly has the responsibility of definitively allocating the headquarters. This first step that the Panam Sports executive took to take away our headquarters should be taken to an extraordinary assembly and I have classified that as a hope that the games can be returned to Barranquilla or, otherwise, the assembly will ratify the decision of the executive,” explained Solano.
Although the exact date of that meeting is not yet known, it is known that in February it will be decided in depth whether Barranquilla will host the Pan American Games or definitely not. The decision will be made in the midst of the scandal over breaches in the contract with Panam Sports. The 41 countries will have to vote for or against.
Through a statement, Neven Ilic, president of the Pan American Sports Organization, notified the withdrawal of the headquarters in Barranquilla after “the innumerable breaches of the current contract.” Furthermore, it was an unwavering determination.
However, the extraordinary assembly could be a last opportunity for the country to host the Games.
The news comes just the same day that documents were revealed showing that the sports minister did have the 8 million dollars to transfer to Panama Sports, despite the fact that from that portfolio they explained that the money was not there.
