Ice Situation in Stockholm Archipelago Causes Traffic Disruption

Waxholmsbolaget has announced that the ice situation in the Stockholm archipelago is becoming increasingly difficult, leading to the rescheduling of traffic for two additional lines. The company stated on its website that the ice situation has forced the withdrawal of a number of bridges, affecting the regular timetable for about ten lines. Anna Hagenblad, an oceanographer at SMHI, confirmed that while the major waterways are still open, there is a significant amount of ice in bays and near piers.

Hagenblad explained that while it is not uncommon for the archipelago to freeze, this year’s unusually cold temperatures have expedited the process. She noted that the early onset of cold weather allowed the water to cool down, leading to faster freezing when temperatures dropped further. However, she emphasized that prolonged periods of very cold weather and calm conditions are necessary for the ice to fully settle.

In response to the icy conditions, SMHI has issued a yellow ice warning in parts of the Baltic Sea, cautioning against the formation of ice on metal structures on board ships, which could affect stability. The warning is in effect until Monday in the most south-eastern parts of the Baltic Sea.

The cold weather has also impacted roads in southern Sweden, with up to 1,000 motorists getting stuck due to a snowstorm on the E22 in Skåne. However, milder temperatures are expected to arrive next week, potentially leading to a quick melt of the ice in the Stockholm archipelago. As such, Waxholmsbolaget is advising passengers to stay updated on any changes to the traffic schedule.
