The International Cereals and Organic Trade Fair in Bangalore is showcasing the diverse products and bio-products of small grains, such as Ragi, Chama, Thina, Jowar and Bajra. The event, which aims to promote the cultivation and utilization of small grains in the state, was first initiated in 2017 by the Siddaramaiah government as part of the millet policy.

The fifth edition of the fair is currently underway, after being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Small grains are of great commercial importance as they provide solutions to a multitude of health problems when included in the diet. They are rich in essential nutrients such as fibers, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, as well as minerals like calcium, zinc, and potassium.

In Karnataka alone, 15.61 lakh hectares of small grains are cultivated, with Ragi occupying 8.28 lakh hectares, Jowar 5.67 lakh hectares, and Bajra 1.31 lakh hectares. Other minor grains are cultivated in 0.35 lakh hectares. The state also exports 36 crore 7764 metric tonnes of small grains and their products to countries such as the USA, Australia, UAE, Canada, Qatar, Thailand, and Singapore.

The International Grains and Organic Trade Fair is not limited to Karnataka, as it also featured sales and exhibition stalls from two other states. A variety of exhibitors, ranging from rural farmers and small enterprises to large companies such as Tata Soulful, 24 Mantra, Semi, and True Elements, are participating in the fair.

The closing ceremony of the fair will be attended by dignitaries such as Central Agriculture and Welfare Minister Arjun Munda, Central Fertilizer Minister Bhagwant Khuba, and State Agriculture Minister N. Chaluvaraya Swami. Malleshwaram MLA Aswath Narayan will preside over the event, which is open to the general public free of charge.
