Throughout the evolution of the dog (canis familaris) alongside man, its appearance has moved away from that of its ancestor, the wolf. Smaller size, shortened muzzle, drooping ears, more rounded head: it has never stopped moving away from the “lupoid” profile to adopt more reassuring morphological features. And the color of his eyes did not escape this process, according to a very recent scientific publication led by a team of researchers from Teikyo University, Tokyo.

After comparing the color of the irises of 22 gray wolves to those of 81 dogs of different breeds, they discovered that our close companions clearly had an iris that was more brown and reddish than that of the wolf, yellow or tawny yellow. Nothing entirely surprising: this is how we imagine the two species, but this is the first time that a scientific study has attempted to quantify it.
