Ed Sheeran Wins First Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics

In a showdown between British pop stars, Ed Sheeran emerged victorious at the Creative Emmy Awards on Saturday, winning the Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for his song “A Beautiful Game” featured in the finale of Apple TV+’s hit show, Ted Lasso.

This marks Sheeran’s first Emmy nomination and subsequent win, a surprise for the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter who was not present at the ceremony to accept the award. Sheeran shared the award with his co-writing team, which included prolific hitmaker Max Martin and Foy Vance.

Following the ceremony, Sheeran took to Instagram to express his gratitude and excitement about the win. He revealed that the song was written two years ago and was approached by the Ted Lasso team.

“We were all fans of the show and got asked to do a song for the finale, so 2 years ago this month we got in together and wrote a song about love and football, and how it is always about the journey rather than the destination,” Sheeran said.

The other nominated song from Season 3 of Ted Lasso was “Fought & Lost”, co-written and performed by Sam Ryder. The category also included original songs from Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia, Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q, Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as Roku’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Although Yankovic didn’t win for “Now You Know”, the show won Emmys for Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series and for Outstanding Television Movie.

Ted Lasso also ended the night with two Emmys as Sam Richardson won for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

Sheeran’s win is a significant achievement for the singer-songwriter, and it marks the first time he has been recognized by the Emmys for his musical talents. Sheeran’s song “A Beautiful Game” captured the hearts of fans and critics alike and is a testament to his continued success in the music industry.
