The year 2024 is off to a bad start for the hundred or so employees of the former Vals-près-le-Puy Casino (Haute-Loire), on the outskirts of Puy-en-Velay. Passed under the Intermarché flag three months ago, following an agreement sealed in May 2023 between the two mass distribution specialists, the hypermarket is already threatened with closure.

The Les Mousquetaires group is in fact ordered to sell its store to a competitor, from 2024, due to its monopoly situation in the Haute-Loire department. The Competition Authority (ADLC) considers that the Intermarché group would have “a market share greater than 50% in an area of 30 minutes by car around the point of sale”.

A real blow to the employees who were just starting to get used to their new owner. “It’s a human tragedy!” We have just experienced years of worry with the Casino group. We’re changing brands. The entire store is redone and we are told that it is finished… Behind this closure, there are dozens of families impacted. We are not pawns! » enrages Christophe Romeuf, CGT union delegate.

The inter-union CGT, FO, CFDT and the employees have decided to launch a petition entitled “Save the Intermarché of Vals-près-le-Puy” posted online in their name, on change.org, in order to denounce this closure which “will be officially notified in mid-January”, assures the inter-union CGT-FO-CFDT. Already several thousand signatories have given their support. Intermarché has between five and nine months to find a buyer, otherwise the doors of the hypermarket will close permanently.
