Title: Jewelry Pawnshop Scam Uncovered in Salem

A shocking case of fraud has come to light in Salem, as Perumal, a 68-year-old resident of Coimbatore, discovered that his jewelry pawnshop near Astampatti Mariamman Temple had been targeted by a close relative.

Last month, Perumal found that 415 customers were unable to locate their pawned jewelry at his shop, despite having valid receipts. Suspecting foul play, he filed a complaint with the Astampatti police, prompting an investigation into the matter.

The police inquiry revealed that Perumal’s 30-year-old cousin, Nandagopal from Pudukottai district, had been pawning the jewelry at a lower interest rate in a bank and subsequently selling some of the items. Additionally, it was discovered that several customers had used fake documents to deceive Perumal into believing that they had retrieved their jewelry.

As a result, a total of 10 kg of gold jewelry with a value of Rs 4.17 crore has been exposed in the scam. Nandagopal has been charged with multiple offenses and is currently under investigation, with the police managing to recover 1.25 kg of the stolen jewelry.

The shocking revelation has left the local community in disbelief, with many expressing concern over the security of their own belongings. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of due diligence and vigilance when dealing with valuable items, as even trusted individuals can perpetrate such deceitful acts. The case continues to unfold as the police work to recover and return the stolen jewelry to its rightful owners.
