The man who pounced on a judge who was about to sentence him last week in the United States appeared in court again this Monday, but for security reasons he appeared wearing a mask similar to that of the character Hannibal Lecter.

In his new appearance in the Las Vegas court, Deobra Redden was handcuffed, with his hands covered by long gloves, wearing a rigid mask to prevent him from biting and a hood that barely allowed his eyes to be seen.

Redden was also flanked by several officers when he arrived at court to hear the sentencing of Judge Mary Kay Holthus, whom he attacked last week.

The attack was recorded by the internal video circuit and exploded like wildfire on social networks in a matter of hours.

When Holthus stated that he would send him to prison instead of releasing him on parole, Redden made an impressive leap onto the stand and fell on top of Holthus, whom he assaulted before being restrained by several men in the room.

A sheriff was injured.

This Monday Redden returned to court to hear the sentence, which Holthus said was not altered by the attack.

“I’m leaving my calendar page from that day as evidence for the court,” the judge said.

“This was there since I got here, before what happened. Nothing changed about the sentence I wanted to impose.”

The judge ruled a sentence of between 19 to 48 months in prison.

But Redden now faces additional charges for the attack, including coercion, extortion, intimidation of a public official with threat of force, disregard for the safety of a person resulting in great bodily injury, and seven counts of assault on a protected person.

The accused had to appear last Thursday to answer to these new charges, but he refused to leave his cell.

The Las Vegas Review Journal said a court order Friday indicated Redden would have to be brought to Monday’s hearing “at any cost.”
