Hamburg.

Manfred Kaltz reacted with dismay to the death of Franz Beckenbauer. “We are all sad. A great athlete and person has left us. I played against him and played with him. He was the figurehead of German football,” the 71-year-old told the German Press Agency. Beckenbauer had died two days earlier at the age of 78.

After his stint at New York Cosmos, German football idol Beckenbauer moved to Hamburger SV. There he played together with defender Kaltz, who was known for his banana crosses. “We were thrilled in 1980 when he came to HSV from the New York Cosmos. At first they said it was a publicity stunt. But then he was there. And we won the championship with him the following season.”

The HSV record player and former national player had recently been “informed” that “he was not doing so well”. In their football retirement, both men met even more often. “Franz had many friends in northern Germany. We often played golf together privately,” said Kaltz. (dpa)
