The increase in demand for treatments for patients with autism spectrum disorder and other global developmental disorders has become a topic of concern in the health policy market.

Companies report increased expenses on therapies of this type, which already reach levels similar to those of oncology, an area that traditionally represents the majority of costs, according to sector entities.

According to research carried out by Abramge (Brazilian Association of Health Plans) in a group of operators associated with the entity, in 2023, the cost of therapies for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and global developmental disorders (TGD) It exceeded 9% of medical spending, while oncological treatments stood at 8.7%.

A few years ago, such treatments represented less than 2% of expenses, according to Abramge.

The costs began to worry companies after changes made by the National Supplementary Health Agency from 2021, which determined that people with ASD would have the right to unlimited sessions with psychologists, occupational therapists and speech therapists in their insurance coverage. .

In 2022, the measures expanded to include coverage of any physician-directed method for patients with PDD.
