“Propaganda solves nothing”

The Government raises the tone against the Xunta de Galicia and demands that it activate emergency level 2 now, which would immediately unlock state aid to face the environmental emergency of pellets. For the moment, the Galician executive of the PP has still not activated this resource that the Government of Asturias has already undertaken, something that will mean the imminent arrival of public resources from the Government for the removal of microplastics.

Rueda refuses to declare the alert level that would allow the Ministry’s help against the pellet tide

“Neither propaganda nor lies solve anything. People ask for collaboration, transparency and management,” claimed the minister spokesperson, Pilar Alegría, at a press conference after the Council of Ministers this Tuesday. Alegría has insisted that the Executive of Pedro Sánchez maintains its “maximum disposition and collaboration with the Xunta”, and she has compared the attitude of the Government of Alfonso Rueda with that of Adrián Barbón in Asturias.

“Why doesn’t the Xunta want the collaboration of the Government of Spain? It is common sense: there are more and better resources to give a better response to what is happening,” she asked herself.

Also, the third vice president and Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, has insisted in an interview on Cadena SER on offering help to the Xunta de Galicia to confront the dumping of millions of plastic pellets. As Ribera has indicated, Rueda does not demand state resources because “they consider that they can do it alone,” although she believes that it is “contradictory” because at the same time they leave the solution “in the hands of city councils and ordinary citizens.”

Ribera has specified that the management of what happened would have been different if Galicia was not in the pre-campaign and has pointed out that it is “striking” that they believe that being “willing to help is a campaign act”, while they do not consider “not requesting help” as an electoral act. “It seems to me that the reaction of the Xunta has a lot to do with the fact of having called elections,” he added.

For now, the regional government continues to classify pellets as “non-toxic.” For the vice president, it is not just about the toxicity of plastics, but plastic pollution in seas and different ecosystems “is one of the big problems facing humanity right now.” In addition, she has indicated that when the toxicity reports are sent to them, they must be sent to the different institutions involved.
