Max Cancels ‘Our Flag Means Death’ After Two Seasons

Max, the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streaming service, has announced the cancellation of its comedy series ‘Our Flag Means Death’ after a two-season run. The pirate comedy, created by David Jenkins and starring Rhys Darby and executive producer Taika Waititi, will not be moving forward with a third season.

A spokesperson for Max shared in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Our Flag Means Death’, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life. We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show.”

The decision to wrap the series comes after Waititi’s other FX comedy, ‘What We Do in the Shadows’, is set to conclude later this year with its sixth season. Waititi’s upcoming projects on the TV side include Apple’s re-do of ‘Time Bandits’, starring Lisa Kudrow.

‘Our Flag Means Death’ has been praised for its queer storylines and has an impressive 94 percent score among critics and a 93 percent rating with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season of the series consisted of 10 episodes and aired in March 2022, with the renewal coming for a shortened eight-episode run that wrapped in October.

Creator David Jenkins shared a heartfelt post about the show’s cancellation, expressing gratitude for being allowed to captain the series. On the comedy side, Max recently handed out a season two renewal for Chuck Lorre’s ‘Bookie’ and revealed that the third season of ‘Hacks’ is expected to arrive in the spring. Max’s roster of comedies also includes ‘And Just Like That’, ‘Rap Shit’ (also awaiting word on a potential third season), and ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ among others.

The cancellation of ‘Our Flag Means Death’ marks the end of a beloved series that has brought joy and inclusivity to its dedicated fanbase.
